Boom truck rental in Ottawa
Ottawa's right-of-way office lists hoisting with a boom truck by name. This page covers what that means for a lift: the permit, its 2026 fees and lead times, the hours the work may run and the roads a heavy truck may use.
Ontario's construction regulation decides who may run the truck and how close it may work to a wire. The City of Ottawa decides whether the truck may store or hoist from City property, for how long, and when it may run. A supplier quotes the job; this page explains what goes into the quote.
R 03 mBoom truck or boom lift: the City lists both
Ottawa's encroachment permit list names hoisting with a mobile crane, helicopter or boom truck, and, on the same list, bucket trucks, articulated booms and scissor lifts1. The machines differ. CSA Z150:26 lists boom truck cranes in its scope2, while articulating (knuckle) boom cranes fall under CSA Z150.32. Bucket trucks and lifts position people. A load to set needs a boom truck, and a supplier will ask whether you want a stiff (telescoping) or a knuckle boom.
See boom trucks, knuckle boom trucks and boom truck vs crane vs boom lift.
R 06 mWho can operate it in Ontario
On construction projects, O. Reg. 213/91 sets three levels by the weight a crane or similar hoisting device can move:
- Over about 13,608 kg (30,000 lb as written): a Mobile Crane Operator 1 certificate, a provisional certificate or a registered apprenticeship3.
- Over about 7,257 kg (16,000 lb) and up to 13,608 kg: an Operator 1 or Operator 2 certificate holder, or a registered apprentice3.
- Below those weights: a worker trained in its operation, who carries written proof of the training3.
Operator 2 is a compulsory trade with a 1,000-hour apprenticeship4. On a bare rental (operator not included), your operator must meet the rule for the unit you rent, so get its rated capacity in writing. Every crane needs a load chart readable at the controls3, and the owner keeps a crane log of inspections, tests and repairs3. Industrial establishments follow other rules we did not research. See Ontario's page and boom truck inspection.
R 09 mWorking near power lines in the city
Summary, not the regulation
Get the voltage from the line's owner, read the regulation and plan the lift with the crane operator before the truck arrives. See working near power lines.
- Distance. No object may come closer than 3 m to an energized overhead conductor rated 750 V or more but not over 150,000 V3, 4.5 m for more than 150,000 V up to 250,000 V3, or 6 m above 250,000 V3.
- Procedures. Where a crane could encroach, the constructor sets written measures and procedures, including warning devices, written notice to the operator and a sign at the operator's station3.
- Signaller. A competent worker stands in full view of the operator with a clear view of the conductor, warning each time the equipment or load may approach the minimum distance3.
Tell the supplier about any line on the street or the yard side when you ask for the quote. The power-line lookup covers each province.
R 12 mSetting up on a street, boulevard or sidewalk
Ottawa requires a temporary construction related encroachment (TCE) permit to store materials or equipment on, above or below the road, boulevard or sidewalk, under the Road Activity By-law 2003-445. The City's FAQ says a crane lifting a pool or hot tub needs one, and that TCE permits are not issued for parking contractor vehicles1.
| What | Fee |
|---|---|
| Simple permit: 10 working days or less | $101.00 |
| Complex permit: more than 10 working days, or a renewal of a Simple permit | $998.00 |
| Rental on a boulevard | $0.87 per m² per day |
| Rental on a sidewalk or roadway | $2.02 per m² per day |
| Minimum rental charge | $41.00 daily1 |
The fees are non-refundable. A permit runs for no more than three months and can be renewed in three-month steps.
Lead time. The City needs a minimum of 10 business days to process a permit, longer for complex projects, adjacent works or parking removal. If parking is to be removed, it needs at least four business days of notice; a renewal needs two1.
Traffic control. A Traffic Management Plan is required if the work affects a bus stop or route, closes a sidewalk, bike lane or road, is near a fire hydrant, or is within 30 m of a signalized intersection. The City provides no traffic control; the permit holder installs the devices under Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 and other rules1. Ask the supplier who prepares the plan.
Insurance. Complex permits and tower crane permits need proof of $5,000,000 of commercial general liability insurance, naming the City, kept for two years after final reinstatement of the highway1.
Closing a lane. City permission is needed before temporarily closing any City road, sidewalk or bike lane. Allow a minimum of 15 business days. The fee is $1,890.00, non-refundable, and the permit holder notifies neighbours in writing, in both official languages, at least ten days ahead5.
Hours. No construction vehicle or construction equipment may operate between 2200 and 0700 hours, or before 0900 hours on a Sunday or statutory or public holiday. Infill housing has tighter hours, 2000 to 0700 and, on weekends and holidays, 1900 to 0900. The by-law's list of construction equipment includes cranes6.
Ground. IHSA says full "on outriggers" chart ratings apply only when every beam is fully extended and all tires are clear of the ground7. Tell the supplier what is under the set-up spot. See outriggers and ground bearing.
R 15 mWhat public rates say in Ontario
Ontario's OPSS.PROV 127 lists boom truck rates by lift capacity for time-and-material work. They cover ownership and operating costs, overhead and profit, and leave out the operator8. Published rates are benchmarks for public works, not quotes.
| Source | Capacity | Operator | $/h | Edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario MTO (OPSS.PROV 127)8 | Boom truck, 7,000 kg lift capacity | Bare | $135.25 | April 2024 |
| Ontario MTO (OPSS.PROV 127) | Boom truck, 11,000 kg lift capacity | Bare | $170.40 | April 2024 |
| Ontario MTO (OPSS.PROV 127) | Boom truck, 25,000 kg lift capacity | Bare | $247.90 | April 2024 |
A July 2026 consultation draft would list $131.60 an hour at 7,000 kg9; it is not in force. A private quote adds minimums, travel and fuel.
Labour. Job Bank's median wage for boom truck crane operators in the Ottawa Region is $37.75 an hour, from $25.00 to $51.00, for 2023 to 202410, against $40.48 for Ontario11. A wage is not a billed rate.
Suppliers. In June 2026 the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area, which spans Ontario and Quebec, had 96 business locations with employees in commercial and industrial machinery and equipment rental and leasing, 39 of them with 1 to 4 employees12. That covers far more than boom trucks, and no official count isolates them. HST is 13% in Ontario13. See boom truck rental rates.
R 18 mMoving the truck: truck routes, spring limits and licence
Truck routes. A heavy vehicle, meaning one over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, must travel on truck routes. It may leave them to deliver to premises not abutting a route, to perform services there that need the vehicle, to be housed or repaired, or to serve the City, and the detour must be direct14. A boom truck serving a site off a route fits the wording on services.
Spring. In the seasonal load restriction period, commercial vehicles or trailers over 5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, or 11,000 lb per axle, are prohibited on roads marked Restricted Loads on the truck route maps, and the limits reach non-truck routes too. The 2026 restrictions ended on May 1114. Provincial reduced-load limits are posted on Ontario 51115. Provincial oversize permits cover King's highways only; municipal roads may need separate permission16.
Licence. A truck over 11,000 kg gross or registered gross weight needs a Class D licence17, and air brakes need a Z endorsement17. A CVOR certificate is required for a truck over 4,500 kg18, and most trucks over 4,500 kg need an annual inspection19. See licence and NSC rules.
R 21 mWhat to send for an Ottawa quote
A supplier prices the lift, not the truck. Ask the supplier for the chart capacity at your radius, and send:
- The load: weight in kilograms, size, pick points and rigging weight.
- Radius and height: from the set-up spot to where the load lands, and what it must clear.
- The set-up spot: driveway, boulevard, sidewalk or roadway, and who applies for the TCE permit.
- Date and duration: 10 working days or less is a Simple permit, $101.00 in 20261.
- Power lines within 3 m of the truck, boom or load3.
- Ground under the outriggers, and the slope.
- The route in, and the dates if spring load limits could apply.
- Operated or bare, and for bare, the operator's certificate.
Example. A 600 kg hot tub is lifted over a house into a back yard from the street, landing 14 m from the truck, on a weekday at 10 a.m. for about an hour. With 40 kg of slings (an example weight), the crane lifts 640 kg at 14 m. IHSA recommends at least a 5% working margin7, so look for at least 672 kg of chart capacity at 14 m. The City's FAQ says a crane lifting a hot tub needs a permit1; a Simple permit is $101.001, with at least 10 business days to process1. The City decides; this is only a planning example. The size estimator does the load arithmetic.
R 24 mHow a request on BoomTrucks.ca works
BoomTrucks.ca is an independent reference. We do not rent, sell or lease equipment. Request a quote; it only goes to a company with your consent.
- Describe the job: boom truck type, operated or bare, load, radius, address, date and any City permit you hold.
- Your request is stored first. You see a reference on screen; we send no confirmation email.
- It is saved, and nothing is sent to a company without your consent. Nothing is sent anywhere before that.
- With your consent, your request goes to one company that rents, sells or finances boom trucks in your area. That company may pay BoomTrucks.ca for the referral.
- That company quotes you directly. Price, permits and terms are between you and it.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to use a boom truck on an Ottawa street?
If it stores or hoists from City property, yes. The City's temporary construction related encroachment permit list names hoisting with a mobile crane or boom truck1. A truck working wholly on private land does not need one, but the noise hours still apply.
How much is an Ottawa permit for a crane lift?
In 2026 a Simple permit, for 10 working days or less, is $101.00, and a Complex permit is $998.00; rental by the square metre is extra1.
How long does an Ottawa encroachment permit take?
A minimum of 10 business days to process, and four business days of notice if parking is to be removed1.
What hours can a boom truck work in Ottawa?
Construction equipment may not operate between 2200 and 0700 hours, or before 0900 hours on a Sunday or statutory or public holiday6.
Which roads can a heavy truck use in Ottawa?
A heavy vehicle, over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, uses truck routes except for direct deviations to deliver, to perform services, to be housed or repaired, or to serve the City14.
