Boom truck and picker rental in Red Deer
Red Deer's Traffic Bylaw names cranes in its street-use rule. This page covers what that means for a lift: the permit, its 2026 fees and lead time, the roads a heavy truck may use, the hours it may work and the Alberta rules behind the ticket.
Red Deer is in Alberta, so the province decides who may run the truck and how close it may work to a wire. The City decides whether the truck may work on or over its right-of-way, what that costs, which roads a heavy truck may use and when equipment may make noise. A supplier quotes the job; this page explains what goes into the quote.
R 03 mPicker or boom truck: what to say in Red Deer
Red Deer searches say picker truck as often as boom truck, and the results mix in pickup rentals and boom lifts. Say picker truck or boom truck, give the load, and say whether the boom is stiff (telescoping) or knuckle (articulating, folding at a joint). Three things it is not:
- A boom lift. Alberta calls it an aerial device, a unit that positions a basket or platform at height1.
- A digger derrick. Alberta's crane trades exclude lifting devices built only for power-line and utility work, such as derricks that auger holes and set poles2. Setting a pole? Ask for that machine.
- A wellhead boom truck. That is a separate branch, with 100 hours of work experience and 5 days of classroom training3.
See picker trucks and knuckle boom trucks.
R 06 mWho can operate it in Alberta
Boom Truck is a compulsory trade in Alberta4. The line is the crane's lifting capacity:
- Telescoping booms, and articulating booms with live lines: a certificate over 4.5 tonnes (5 tons) up to 59 tonnes (65 tons)4.
- Knuckle booms without live lines: a certificate over 7.3 tonnes (8 tons) up to 59 tonnes (65 tons)4.
- Below those lines: a competent worker authorized by the employer, able to show knowledge of the load charts and signal code (s.64)1.
The apprenticeship is 1,200 hours of work experience and 6 weeks of classroom training4. On a bare rental (operator not included), your operator must meet the rule for the crane you rent, so get its rated capacity and boom type in writing. A lift above 75% of rated capacity needs a lift calculation1.
Alberta has no annual non-destructive testing rule that names boom trucks: s.89 covers mobile cranes as the Code defines them, at 12-month intervals1, and that definition excludes boom trucks, as does s.88, which adopts CAN/CSA Z150-98 (R2004)1. Ask what inspections the truck has had. See Alberta's page and reading a load chart.
R 09 mWorking near power lines in the city
Summary, not the regulation
Get the voltage from the line's operator, read the OHS Code and plan the lift with the crane operator before the truck arrives. See working near power lines.
Before work is done or equipment operated within 7 m of an overhead line, the employer must find its voltage and set the limit of approach from Schedule 41. The distance is 3.0 m for 750 V to 40 kV1 and 3.5 m for 69 kV and 72 kV1. Closer work means notifying the line's operator first and getting its help protecting workers1.
The distances do not apply to equipment transported under lines when its total height, carrier included, is under 4.15 m1. Check your line in the power-line lookup.
R 12 mSetting up on a street or lane
Under s.89 of Red Deer's Traffic Bylaw, no one may use vehicles, materials or equipment that obstruct the right-of-way, carry out construction on it, or "use any equipment, such as a crane, or conduct work on or over" it without a Use of Streets Permit. Hoarding needs one too, and equipment may not be left after the permit expires5.
| What | Fee |
|---|---|
| Daily closure of a roadway or sidewalk, up to 30 days | $53.46 a day |
| Monthly closure, full roadway | $16.04 per lineal metre |
| Monthly closure, partial roadway | $8.02 per lineal metre |
| Monthly closure, sidewalk | $3.74 per lineal metre |
| Parking stall reservation, per day | $8.50 to $17.00 by zone, plus $17.75 per application6 |
The City says the fees may rise each January 1 with Alberta's consumer price index. The stall rates are $17.00 in a 30-minute zone, $14.88 in a 2-hour zone, $10.63 in a 4-hour zone and $8.50 in an 8-hour zone.
Lead time. To close a street, lane or sidewalk, submit a Traffic Accommodation Strategy to Engineering Services 2 to 3 business days before the closure, showing the closure, signs, flag persons and a site contact. Or ask Parks and Public Works for traffic control with the same 2 to 3 business days of notice, at separate fees. Allow at least two working days to process a request6. Settle the date and the set-up spot with the supplier first, and ask who sets out the signs.
Hours. No one may use tools, machinery or equipment so as to create noise that can be heard in a residential building between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.; the City and its contractors are excepted7.
Ground. Alberta requires a boom truck's outriggers to be extended on solid footings1, and for mobile cranes floats or pads1, so ask for pads on a boom truck too. See outriggers and ground bearing.
R 15 mWhat Alberta rates are based on
We found no free public hourly rate for a boom truck or picker in Alberta. Alberta's public buyers pay a paid guide's rates: the Alberta Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA) sells its 2026 Rental Rates Guide for $2008, and Red Deer County pays 100% of current ARHCA hourly rates on its 2026 work list, with up to 3 hours of mobilization and labour capped at $55.00 an hour9. We have not bought the guide and do not reproduce it. Published rates are benchmarks for public works, not quotes.
Alberta Wildfire sets rates only for fireline equipment the guide does not cover10. Its one rate that names a picker is below.
| Source | Capacity | Operator | $/h | Edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta Wildfire10 | 1-ton hotshot truckFuel and operator included | Operated | $125.90 | March 2026 |
| Alberta Wildfire | Picker or crane on a hotshot truck or trailer (add-on)Add-on to another rate. Added to the hotshot truck rate | See note | +$17.52 | March 2026 |
That is a small crane on a light truck hired for fires, not a larger picker working in a city.
Labour. Job Bank publishes no median wage for boom truck crane operators in the Red Deer Region; the Alberta median is $45.00 an hour11. A wage is not a billed rate.
Suppliers. In June 2026 the Red Deer census metropolitan area had 22 business locations with employees in commercial and industrial machinery and equipment rental and leasing, 7 of them with 1 to 4 employees12. That covers far more than boom trucks, and no official count isolates them. GST is 5% in Alberta13. See picker truck rates.
R 18 mMoving the truck: Heavy Vehicle routes and road bans
Heavy Vehicle. The bylaw's term covers any vehicle with more than 2 axles, longer than 12.5 m, or over 8,000 kg actual or registered weight. It may not operate, park or stop on a highway that is not a designated truck route unless it holds a Heavy Vehicle Permit. It may travel, but not park or stop, off a route by the most direct and practical way to or from a place where it is providing services to a customer, delivering or collecting goods or working on a highway, among other listed purposes. The permit must be carried5. A tandem or tri-drive picker has three or more axles, so it falls in this class by the axle count alone.
Road bans. Under ss.16-17, a vehicle may not run on a road-ban highway if its axle weight exceeds the percentage posted, unless a Heavy Vehicle Permit allows it. Under ss.21-23, an over-dimensional vehicle may not park or stop on a highway and needs its own permit to operate5. The City ended its 2026 temporary spring bans at 7 a.m. on June 5, and some roads carry limits of 50% to 90% of axle weight until further notice14. Outside the city, provincial bans follow thaw depth readings of at least 25 cm and counties set bans on local roads15. Provincial oversize permits go through TRAVIS16.
Licence and carrier rules. A truck with 3 or more axles needs a Class 3 licence17; a two-axle truck falls under Class 518. A Safety Fitness Certificate is required for a truck registered at 11,794 kg or more operating only within Alberta19, and those trucks need a CVIP inspection every 12 months20. See licence and NSC rules.
R 21 mWhat to send for a Red Deer quote
A supplier prices the lift, not the truck. Ask the supplier for the chart capacity at your radius, and send:
- The load: weight in kilograms, size, pick points and rigging weight.
- Radius and height: from the set-up spot to where the load lands, and what it must clear.
- The set-up spot: yard, driveway, street or lane, and who applies for the Use of Streets Permit.
- Date, time and duration: a closure needs 2 to 3 business days of notice6, and noise rules start at 10 p.m.
- Power lines within 7 m of the truck, boom or load1.
- Ground under the outriggers, and the slope.
- The route in, and the dates if a road ban could apply.
- Operated or bare, and for bare, the operator's certificate.
Example. A knuckle picker sets 1,200 kg of roof trusses on a shop from a side street, landing 10 m from the truck, on a weekday at 10 a.m. for about three hours. With 80 kg of rigging (an example weight), the crane lifts 1,280 kg at 10 m. If that is more than 75% of the chart capacity at 10 m, Alberta requires a lift calculation1. A one-day roadway closure would carry the $53.46 daily fee6, with a Traffic Accommodation Strategy in 2 to 3 business days ahead6. The City decides; this is only a planning example. The size estimator does the load arithmetic.
R 24 mHow a request on BoomTrucks.ca works
BoomTrucks.ca is an independent reference. We do not rent, sell or lease equipment. Request a quote; it only goes to a company with your consent.
- Describe the job: picker or boom truck, operated or bare, load, radius, address, date and any City permit you hold.
- Your request is stored first. You see a reference on screen; we send no confirmation email.
- It is saved, and nothing is sent to a company without your consent. Nothing is sent anywhere before that.
- With your consent, your request goes to one company that rents, sells or finances boom trucks in your area. That company may pay BoomTrucks.ca for the referral.
- That company quotes you directly. Price, permits and terms are between you and it.
